Egypt set a new Guinness World Record for the largest mosaic of the boy king Tutankhamun's mask made of coffee cups

Some 200 people gathered at the open court of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) on Saturday to create a replica of the ancient Egyptian’s iconic boy king using coffee cups.

A total of 7,260 neatly-layered cups, covering 60 square metres, were used in making the world's largest coffee cup mosaic.

For the attempt, 12 local producers of coffee cups provided cups with seven different flavours and colours to create the palette for Tutankhamun's mask mosaic, including soy sauce (brown), sesame (black), and matcha (green).

Once the record was set, the coffee cups were distributed (as per the requirement for food-related records) among the participants as well as children.

The Tutankhamun's mask replica beat the 2012 world record set by a US coffee-cup mosaic depicting Elvis Presley's face, which consisted of 5,642 cups of coffee with a total area of 37.24 square metres.

The GEM is scheduled to open in late 2020.
