The Giza pyramids archaeological site is now allowing entry using electronic tickets, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced.

The move, which is implemented starting Wednesday, is part of a larger plan to digitise services at archaeological sites.

The electronic tickets bear a QR code and can only be used once at new smart gates that read tickets at a high speed to prevent overcrowding, according to Director-General of Giza Plateau Ashraf Mohieldin.

The new system also will also keep track of the number of visitors, the ministry said in a statement on the new system.

The Giza Plateau is the second archaeological site to install the electronic ticketing system in September, after electronic payment machines were installed at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.
