The ministry will turn off non-essential external lighting at six archaeological sites and nine museums across Egypt for one hour, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

This year’s Earth Hour theme is "Together for the Biggest Earth Hour," emphasizing collective action to address climate change.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathi highlighted Egypt’s significance in this global event. The ministry’s participation reflects its commitment to raising awareness about energy conservation, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable practices.

The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change by encouraging responsible energy use.
Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), confirmed that the ministry will turn off unnecessary lighting at key heritage sites and museums nationwide.

These sites include Saladin Citadel in Cairo, Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria, Luxor Temple and Deir El-Bahari archaeological area in Luxor, Qubbat Al-Hawa in Aswan, in addition to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the Royal Carriages Museum in Bulaq, the Graeco-Roman Museum and the Alexandria National Museum in Alexandria, the Mallawi Museum in Minya, Sohag National Museum in Sohag, Luxor Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art in Luxor and Nubia Museum in Aswan, and Sharm El-Sheikh Museum in South Sinai.

The Earth Hour is one of the world’s largest environmental awareness campaigns, observed annually on the last Saturday of March.

The timing coincides with the spring equinox, when day and night are nearly equal, symbolizing a global moment of unity in the fight against climate change.

By joining the initiative, Egypt reaffirms its dedication to preserving its rich cultural heritage while promoting environmental responsibility.

The event serves as a reminder of the urgent need to reduce energy consumption and adopt sustainable practices to safeguard the planet for future generations.
