Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Police on Wednesday succeeded in recovering a 19th-century painting stolen two days earlier from the Mena House Oberoi Hotel near the Giza pyramids.

The painting, drawn in 1899, depicts women gathering in a palace adorned with Islamic architectural motifs.

According to a statement to the press, investigators discovered the missing work of art after receiving a phone call from an unknown source who informed them that it was located in the hotel’s basement. Policemen subsequently found the painting at the said location, wrapped in linen.
