Saud Alsanousi to launch English translation of The Bamboo Stalk in London

Kuwaiti novelist Saud Alsanousi will launch the English translation of his Arabic Booker winning novel, Saq Al-Bamboo (The Bamboo Stalk) in London later this month.

Alsanousi won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (the Arabic Booker) in 2013 for the original Arabic edition of the novel.

According to a press release from the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, the book will be launched at Waterstones Piccadilly on Wednesday, 29 April 2015. After an introduction by Paul Blezard, who will also read excerpts from the novel, Alsanousi will discuss his work with Dima Choukr, editor of Al-Araby Al-Jadeed's cultural supplement.

The event starts at 6.30pm.

The Bamboo Stalk explores issues of identity, ethnicity and religion through its Kuwaiti-Filipino protagonist, José.

The English edition of The Bamboo Stalk will be published by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing on 23 April 2015. Jonathan Wright, who translated the novel from Arabic, will take part in the launch event.
