Egypt extended its condolences to the Philippines on Sunday night after a military plane had crashed, killing 50 people, mostly soldiers, and injuring dozens.

“The Egyptian government and people affirm their support to the government and friendly people of the Philippines following this painful incident,” a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read.

“Egypt also extends its deep condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured,” the statement added.

The Philippines authorities ordered on Monday a probe into the crash of the military plane that overshot a runway at Jolo airport in Sulu province and burst into flames a day earlier.

The death toll rose to 50, including 47 soldiers on board of the Lockheed C-130 and three civilians on the ground. Some passengers could jump seconds before the plane crashed, officials cited witnesses as saying.

The plane carried recently graduated troops to take part in counter-insurgency operations.
