The Egyptian community in the UK has launched a humanitarian campaign to save the life of an Egyptian child, flown to London for urgent surgery.

Abdelrahman Ahmad Selim, 4, needs a series of surgical procedures to "reconstruct the bladder neck" plus "laparoscopic right nephroureterectomy."

Supporters say Selim should be admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, one of best-known of its kind internationally, as soon as possible.

However, to be admitted, it is necessary for the hospital to receive the required deposit, estimated at £25.400, for the treatment.

The Egyptian House in London, an Egyptian social organisation, has launched a fundraising campaign to help collect the money.

Mostafa Ragab, director of the Egyptian House, said about £15.000 had been raised until now, urging donors to give generously.

"We appeal to all people in the UK, Egypt and anywhere to help save the child’s life," he told Ahram Online.

According to Dr Imran Mushtaq, consultant paediatric urologist, the child's right kidney and ureter need to be removed.

"Recent investigations confirm that he has a grossly dilated non-functioning right kidney and ureter, which is a consequence of previous surgery," Mushtaq said in his medical report.

Dr Mushtaq recommended a laparoscopic right nephroureterectomy and a redo bladder neck reconstruction.

Further assessment of the Mitrofanoff channel is also required.

For these procedures to be completed, Abdelrahman needs to be in hospital for a period of seven to 10 days.

He then needs a further two weeks of recovery at home and should return in three weeks from the time of surgery for post-operative treatment, according to the report.

The deposit should be paid at least 10 working days prior to the proposed admission date.

Abdelrahman has been suffering hugely since he was two years old, his father told Ahram Online.

"I don't know what to do now. Finally I found the right path to get my poor son back. We have strong feelings that Great Ormand Street Hospital's doctors can save his life," he said.

At the request of Egyptian House and Ahmad Selim, Abdelrahman's father, the hospital opened a special bank account for fund raising.

Dr Tariq Alfar , the Egyptian medical attaché in London, pledged to offer as much support as possible. However, he said nothing can be done financially from London as he needs an executive order from the Ministry of Health in Cairo to pay for Abdelrahman's treatment.
