At the age of 106, Egypt's oldest coronavirus patient has died, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported Sunday.
Ibrahim Al-Attar, the latest vicitm of the virus, had been admitted to an isolation hospital in Egypt's coastal El-Beheria governorate as a result of contracting the highly contagious virus, according to his grandson.
On Saturday, he was transferred to an intensive care unit and put on a ventilator as he suffered further Covid-19 complications before succumbing to the disease early Sunday.
Al-Attar, who was born in August 1914, had married only one time and had eight sons and more than 120 grandchildren.
Al-Attar's death comes days after the country announced the recuperation of a 97-year-old Egyptian woman to become the oldest coronavirus survivor countrywide.
On 16 June, “Mrs Fathia” was discharged from a quarantine hospital in Sharqyia governorate around two weeks after her admission.
The first coronavirus fatality was announced in Egypt 8 March, while the record daily high was registered on 15 June with 97 fatalities.
As of Saturday, Egypt has recorded 3,280 fatalities and 20,103 recoveries out of 74,035 confirmed cases reported across the country since mid-February when the outbreak hit the highly populated nation.
Last month, Minister of Health Hala Zayed said that Egypt is among the countries with the lowest coronavirus death rates.
Zayed added that 60 percent of coronavirus fatalities in Egypt are in patients who are over 60 years old and those with chronic diseases have had the highest mortality rate.
She noted around 80 percent of Covid-19 sufferers are aged between 30-60 years old, while male patients account for 55 percent of the total number.
