Magnitude 5.26 earthquake hits near Marsa Matrouh; no damage reported
An earthquake measuring 5.26 on the Richter scale hit Sunday south of the Mediterranean Greek island of Crete, approximately 430 kilometres north of Egypt’s Marsa Matrouh, the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced.

The quake occurred 7.04 kilometres deep at 6:03am Cairo local time, according to the NRIAG.
No casualties or property damage has been reported, the NRIAG said in its statement, adding that residents did not feel the quake.
The last major earthquake hit the country in 1992, measuring 5.8 in magnitude, killing 541 people and injuring over 6,500 in Greater Cairo.
In 1903, Egypt was hit by the strongest earthquake in the country’s recent memory, which killed 10,000 people.
