No casualties or damage were reported, but the tremor was felt in Cairo and other governorates, NRIAG President Gad El-Qady said in a statement.

The quake occurred at 12:25 am local time at depth of 10 kilometres, according to the map released by NRIAG

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also recorded the quake at a magnitude of 4.1.

The NRIAG said it is closely following up on any seismic activity through the Egyptian National Seismic Network (ENSN), which is constantly analysing data after quakes in neighbouring countries.

The last major earthquake hit the country in 1992, measuring 5.8 in magnitude, killing 541 people and injuring over 6,500 in Greater Cairo.
