Earlier Wednesday, a video showing the new governor of Sohag Abdel-Fattah Serag scolding Dr Samar Anwar, the OB-GYN at Al-Maragha Central Hospital hospital, went viral in Egypt. The governor, who had been on an inspection tour of the hospital on Tuesday, scolded the doctor for refusing to examine a patient who did not have a ticket.
The video went viral after it was published by the governorate on Wednesday, garnering mixed reactions, with some applauding the governor's actions and others sympathizing with the doctor. The video was later removed.
Some Sohag Doctors' Syndicate members submitted their resignations in solidarity with their colleague, Dr. Samar Anwar.
One member of the Sohag Doctors' Syndicate Board posted their resignation, stating, "We, the members of the Sohag Doctors' Syndicate Board, submit our resignation due to the humiliating incident that occurred on Tuesday against a doctor at Al-Maragha Central Hospital by the new governor of Sohag, who verbally assaulted and accused her of negligence and lack of conscience for following the rules and regulations governing the practice of medicine."
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly apologized to the doctor following the widespread reaction on social media.
In a press conference after the weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Madbouly said that "as executive officials, we are keen to ensure citizen satisfaction. It is the governor's right to strive for the best service for citizens without infringing the rights of state employees. I apologize to the doctor if any transgression occurred."
Egypt’s Medical syndicate praised PM Madbouly's stance on the incident and his public apology to the doctor during a live press conference.
The syndicate also affirmed its commitment to following up on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health stated that Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, called Dr Samar Anwar about the incident.
Abdel-Ghaffar emphasized his appreciation for all Egyptian doctors and the medical team, stressing that all possible means are provided to enable them to perform their duties according to recognized global standards. He also affirmed that the state highly respects their contributions.
In addition, Abdel-Ghaffar invited Dr Samar and her husband, a doctor too, to visit him at his office in the Ministry of Health next Monday.
