In the last few weeks, Egypt reiterated its insistence on a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza and the Philadelphi corridor (aka Salah Al-Din axis) along their border, which were occupied by the Israeli military in May,
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in recent public statements that the Israeli army would continue to deploy along the Philadelphi corridor regardless of the outcome of any potential ceasefire deal with Hamas and over the rejections from Cairo.
Egypt, along with the US and Qatar, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire deal in the 10-month-old Israeli war in Gaza.
The last rounds of talks were held in Doha last week but no ceasefire deal was completed.
After that round, the leaders of Egypt, the US, and Qatar issued a joint statement calling on Israel and Hamas to resume the ceasefire talks this Thursday whether in Cairo or Doha to close all remaining gaps and commence implementation of the deal without further delay.
“It is time to bring immediate relief both to the long-suffering people of Gaza as well as the long-suffering hostages and their families,” the joint statement said that the time has come to conclude the ceasefire and hostages and detainees release deal," read the statement.
According to the Axios news website on Thursday, the director of the Israeli Shin Bet Ronen Bar, the head of the Mossad David Barnea, and the head of the IDF's strategic division, Gen. Eliezer Toledano, flew to Egypt on Thursday to attend a new round of ceasefire talks in Cairo.
Axios added that Biden's top Middle East adviser Brett McGurk also arrived in Cairo to join the talks and that Director of General Egyptian Intelligence Service General Abbas Kamel will be leading the Egyptian delegation.
Axios quoted informed sources who said the Israeli officials arrived in Cairo with an updated map that reflects Tel Aviv's official position regarding the deployment of its army along the Philadelphi corridor.
The sources said the map shows a reduction in the number of Israeli forces but still has their full deployment along the entire Philadelphi corridor.
They added that Egypt has said it rejects any permanent or long-term Israeli deployment on the Palestinian side of its border with Gaza.
