Kenyan President William Ruto and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi
According to the Egyptian Presidency, El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to preserving Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, supporting its national institutions, and ending the ongoing humanitarian tragedy, particularly in and around the city of Al-Fasher.
The Egyptian president also highlighted Cairo’s continued efforts to promote calm in Sudan within the framework of the Quartet mechanism.
President Ruto, for his part, praised Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to help end the Sudanese crisis, expressing his desire to coordinate closely with Egypt in supporting peace and stability in the neighbouring country.
Sudan has been mired in a brutal civil war since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The conflict has displaced millions, killed tens of thousands, and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Fighting has intensified in Darfur, especially around the city of Al-Fasher, the last stronghold under army control in the region, raising fears of the country’s split.
Egypt has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and negotiations to preserve Sudan’s territorial integrity.
Nile Basin cooperation
The two leaders also discussed Nile water cooperation.
El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm position supporting development projects in Nile Basin countries, provided they do not harm Egypt’s water interests, rejecting any unilateral actions taken by Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has carried out multiple unilateral moves related to the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile, despite years of negotiations with Egypt and Sudan to reach a legally binding agreement.
Cairo views the dam’s unilateral filling and operation as a potential threat to its vital share of Nile waters, describing Addis Ababa’s moves as violations of international law.
Meanwhile, Ruto affirmed Kenya’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation and economic integration among Nile Basin states, underscoring that no country’s interests should be compromised.
He also expressed gratitude for Egypt’s development support to Kenya in various sectors, the statement added.
Horn of Africa stability
The conversation further touched on the situation in Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa, where both leaders agreed on the need to intensify efforts to restore peace, security, and stability in the region, while safeguarding Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and the rights of its people.
Bilateral cooperation
Both presidents praised the strong bilateral relations between Egypt and Kenya, particularly following President Ruto’s visit to Cairo in January 2025, and agreed on the importance of continuing efforts to strengthen cooperation in various fields under their strategic partnership.
El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s readiness to enhance economic cooperation through greater participation of Egyptian companies in Kenya’s development projects.
President Ruto, for his part, voiced deep appreciation for Egypt’s continued support, stressing his country’s keenness to maintain close coordination and consultation with Cairo on bilateral and regional matters of mutual concern.
During the call, El-Sisi extended his condolences to Ruto over the victims of the recent landslide in Kenya, affirming Egypt’s solidarity with the Kenyan people and the families affected.
