Edward Said's son to deliver memorial lecture at AUC on 2 November

Wadie Said will explore his father’s work through a retrospective look at several trips they took together to the Middle East

Wadie Edward Said, the son of the late renowned Palestinian American thinker and writer, Edward Said, will deliver the annual Edward Said Memorial Lecture, at the American University in Cairo on Saturday, 2 Nov under the Title: “Edward Said: Teachings, Familial and Otherwise.”

The lecture will be delivered at the Oriental Hall; Tahrir Campus, on Saturday at 6:00pm.

In this talk, Wadie Said will explore the work of Edward Said through a retrospective look at several trips they took together to the Middle East over the last period of Edward Said's life. In so doing, he identifies the genesis of Said's writings and positions as they took shape in particular moments and situations. Additionally, he will examine the relationship between Said's public opinions and his role as a father teaching a son how to navigate the world more generally.

As part of his visit to Cairo, he will also give another lecture on Monday, November 4, at the AUC's New Cairo Campus entitled "Legal Classifications and their global impact: Understanding American Notions of Terrorism."

The lecture will be held at Moataz Al-Alfi Hall at 1:00pm.

Wadie, who is a professor of law at the University of South Carolina and he is an elected member of the American Law Institute, and serves on the Board of Editors of Amerasia Journal, as well as the Executive Committee of the AALS Section on National Security Law.
