International Booker Prize announces its shortlist, includes first Hindi title

The International Booker Prize announced on Thursday, the six books in contention for this year’s prize, which celebrates fiction from around the world, translated into English.

The shortlist included the Polish Nobel literature laureate Olga Tokarczuk, for her 18th-century epic "The Books of Jacob''.

The announcement was made at The London Book Fair by chair of the judges, Frank Wynne. This year's shortlist is dominated by women writers, and includes a Hindi title for the first time.

Cursed Bunny, by Korean author Bora Chung, transalted by Anton Hur and published by Honford Star.

A New Name: Septology VI-VII, by Norwegian author, Jon Fosse and translated by Damion Searls and published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.

Heaven, by Japanese author Mieko Kawakami, translated by Sam Bett and David Boyd, published by Pan Macmillan, Picador

Elena Knows, by Argentinean author Claudia Piñeiro, translated by Frances Riddlem, and published by Charco Press.

Tomb of Sand, by Indian author Geetanjali Shree, translated by Daisy Rockwell, and published by Tilted Axis Press.

The Books of Jacob, by Polish author OlgaTokarczuk, translated by Jennifer Croft and published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.

The contribution of author and translator is given equal recognition, with the £50,000 prize split evenly between them.

In addition, for the first time in 2022, the shortlisted authors and translators will each receive £2,500, increased from £1,000 in previous years - bringing the total value of the prize to £80,000. 

The six shortlisted works are each translated from a different language and originate from a different country, with three continents represented on the list.

The list includes the two previous winners, Olga Tokarczuk and her translator Jennifer Croft, alongside authors translated into English for the first time.

The shortlist was selected by the 2022 judging panel consisting of: translator, Frank Wynne (chair); author and academic Merve Emre; writer and lawyer Petina Gappah; writer, comedian and TV, radio and podcast presenter, Viv Groskop; and translator and author Jeremy Tiang.

This year the judges considered 135 books, with a record number of submissions received. The 2022 International Booker Prize winner will be announced on 26 May 2022 at a ceremony at One Marylebone in London.
