The former Israeli minister of education has attacked two of the country’s previous prime ministers, describing them as “terrorists.”
In his remarks, made during a school ceremony in Tel Aviv, Yossi Sarid said that if any Israeli believes that former Palestinian president Mahmoud Yasser Arafat was a terrorist, so former Israeli prime ministers Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir were terrorists too.
“Jewish terrorists provoke me more than Arab terrorists do, as the Jewish ones want to make all Israelis like them,” he added.
During Sarid’s remarks, many in the audience shouted at him to leave the stage and apologise for his comments.
During the 1948 Arab War, Begin and Shamir formed Jewish gangs that committed atrocities against Palestinians in the West Bank. Their groups were behind the Dir Yassin massacre in April 1948 when 249 Palestinian villagers were killed and many schoolgirls raped.
