The Palestinian based Islamic Jihad movement has accused the Palestinian Authority of torturing and abusing its affiliates

The Islamic Jihad movement accused Prime Minister Salam Fayyad's government in the West Bank of torturing its imprisoned affiliates.

The news website Palestine Today -- closely connected to the jihadist movement -- cited a movement official Sunday saying that its members were subjected to severe torture in an attempt to extract information on a shooting which targeted an Israeli army roadblock in the West Bank.

The source confirmed that the security apparatus has been operating a large campaign targeting the movement and its supporters and stressed that the number of arrests has gone up.

In the same context, the Islamic Jihad accused the security services of assaulting Al-Sheikh Khedr Adnan, one if it's most prominent leaders.

The group released a statement received by another media organ, saying that government security assaulted Adnan during mourning services held for movement member Salem Smoudi who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers.

The statement also said that the assault came in response to Adnan's criticisms against the PA's political arrest campaigns in the West Bank.

Khedr Habib, a leader in the movement, said the Palestinian Authority protects the Zionist entity through security coordination instead of fulfilling its true function which is to protect its own people.
