"Approximately 10 projectile launches were identified crossing from the area adjacent to the Rafah Crossing toward the area of Karm Abu Salem," the army said in a statement, adding that the "crossing is currently closed to the passage of humanitarian aid trucks."
The Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas military wing, claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli troops at the site using short-range 114 mm Rajoum artillery rockets.
The attack killed four Israeli soldiers and wounded eight, according to the group's Telegram, but this claim could not be independently verified.
It is unclear how long the closure will remain in effect.
Israeli authorities reopened the crossing to aid in December after closing it on 7 October, supplementing the aid flowing in through the Rafah Border Crossing between Gaza and Egypt.
Israeli extremists have repeatedly attacked and attempted to block humanitarian aid trucks at the crossing from entering Gaza.
The incident comes when Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis with shortages of food, medicine and other humanitarian items.
