African Taekwondo Federation and Vice-President of the World Federation, Ahmed El-Fouly has expressed his great pleasure at the high turnout expected at the African Para Taekwondo Open Championship to be held on 29 February in Hurghada.

The fourth edition of the Championship has a record in the number of participants, with 120 players from 28 countries on five continents.

El-Fouly explained that the main reason for this turnout is the sport’s inclusion in the Paralympic Games for the first time in Tokyo in 2020.

"After the inclusion of Para Taekwondo in Tokyo 2020, all countries became eager to practice the sport and participate in international championships, in order to collect points to be added to their personal points to be able to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games," El-Fouly said.

"The African Open Championship, to take place in Hurghada, is authorised by the World Federation and its points will be officially added to the participants; this is the reason for such a turnout," he added.

He also went on to say that the one-day competition in Hurghada will see the participation of the world champions who are participating in the current World Championship in Turkey.

The African Taekwondo Federation also pointed out [you mean El-Fouly pointed out?] that the championship has received great attention from Egypt, represented by Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy, in line with the country's policy of rapprochement with countries of the African continent, with Egypt receiving the presidency of the African Union.

El-Fouly ended his statement saying that the businessmen's orientation to sponsor the African Taekwondo Union and the African Championship demonstrates a great awareness from the large companies and that contributes to the success of the championship which has great attention from the Media, he added that The Organizing Committee of the Championship is exerting great efforts to present the championship in its best form appropriate for the name of Egypt, in one of the most beautiful cities of Egypt "Hurghada".
