Zamalek’s left-back Mohamed Abdel-Shafi tested positive for coronavirus, the Cairo giants announced early on Sunday.

“Abdel-Shafi will follow the treatment protocol for coronavirus as the result of his positive  test,” Zamalek’s doctor Mohamed Osama told the club’s official website.

The 35-year old international defender has just rejoined Zamalek team after remaining months on the sidelines since fracturing his collarbone last August - appearing in Thursday’s 2-0 win over El-Entag .

The player is now confirmed to miss Monday’s League match against National Bank of Egypt Club.

Zamalek currently lead the league table with 36 points from 16 matches, three ahead of holders Ahly who still have two matches in hand.

Football activities in Egypt were suspended for almost five months last year - from March to August - over the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

Several Egyptian football coaches and players contacted the virus in the past months.

The Egyptian Football Association announced earlier on Sunday that Egypt coach Hossam El-Badry has tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to the latest health ministry statement issued on Saturday, Egypt registered 912 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 221,570 cases and the death toll to 12,998 nationwide.
