In their first ever Champions League appearance, South Africa's Amazulu FC sprang the biggest upset so far after eliminating five-time winners TP Mazembe on Saturday.

Amazulu FC were held to a 0-0 home draw by the DR Congo giants last week, only to secure a 1-1 result in Lubumbashi and seal their qualification on the away goal rule.

Bongi Ntuli scored for Amazulu FC in the 37th minute before Mazembe's Adam Bossu grabbed the equaliser three minutes into stoppage time. However, it was too little, too late as Mazembe waved goodbye to Africa's premier club competition in stunning fashion.

The South African rising power, who are led by former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy, have been building up momentum since they were taken over in 2020.

In October 2020, businessman Sandile Zungu purchased the club from Patrick Sokhela with promises to turn around their fortunes. He made an overhaul of the management, bringing in McCarthy to take charge of the team.

McCarthy made an immediate impact as the team finished second in the South African league for the first time ever to earn a historic Champions League spot.

They have already made their presence felt and they are now expected to mount a serious challenge in the group stage.
