Egyptian side Pyramids FC will host Morocco’s FAR Rabat in the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday, aiming for their first-ever win against Moroccan opposition in continental competitions.

The Cairo-based club, currently leading the Egyptian domestic league, enter the tie following a 4-0 victory over NBE Club in Egypt Cup semi-final last week.

“We know this is a difficult match. FAR Rabat are a strong side with experience, but we’ve studied them well. Our players are focused and ready,” Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic told reporters on Monday.

Pyramids qualified for the last eight after finishing second in Group D with 13 points, level with Tunisia’s Esperance but behind on goal difference. FAR Rabat topped Group B with 10 points, edging out South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Egyptian side is making only their second appearance in the Champions League and seeking a first-ever semifinal berth in the competition. However, their record against Moroccan clubs remains a concern, with no wins in six previous official meetings across CAF competitions.

Goalkeeper Ahmed El Shennawy expressed confidence despite the team’s historical struggles against Moroccan opposition.

“We’ve grown as a team since our last meetings with Moroccan clubs. We are determined to advance and nothing will distract us from that goal,” El Shennawy said.

Jurcic is expected to field an attacking lineup featuring Ramadan Sobhi, Ibrahim Adel, and Fiston Mayele, with Blati Toure and Mostafa Fathi providing support from midfield as the Croatian coach seeks a comfortable margin before the return leg.

FAR Rabat have shown impressive form in the competition, losing just once in the group stage while conceding only four goals, according to tournament statistics.

The second leg will take place on 8 April at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with the winner advancing to face either MC Alger or Orlando Pirates in the semifinals.
