Mokwena takes over from Croatian manager Krunoslav Jurcic, who parted ways with the big-spending club at the end of last season following a highly successful two-and-a-half-year tenure during which he guided the team to five titles.

The 39-year-old new coach previously worked with Moroccan giants Wydad in the 2024/2025 season before departing by mutual consent, followed by short stints with Algeria's MC Alger {2025/2026} and finally Libya's Al-Ittihad since March 2026 and until the end of the season.
However, Mokwena’s most illustrious managerial spell came with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns from 2022 to 2024, leading them to five major trophies, including the domestic league four times, alongside clinching the inaugural African Football League (AFL) crown.
He also steered MC Alger to win the Algerian Super Cup during his brief spell.
Mokwena becomes the second South African manager to take the helm of an Egyptian Premier League club. He follows in the footsteps of his compatriot Pitso Mosimane, who enjoyed a historic, trophy-laden spell with Cairo giants Al Ahly.
Pyramids FC concluded their 2025-2026 Egyptian Premier League campaign as runners-up, securing their spot in the upcoming edition of the prestigious CAF Champions League.
