A new wooden edge of Alfawara dome at the open court of historic Cairo's Al-Sultan Hassan Mosque has collapsed without causing any damage to the monument.
Osama Talaat, head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish antiquities, asserted the fallen piece is not genuine. It has been inserted to the monumental dome during restoration carried out in early 20th century by the Preservation Committee for Arab Antiquities, he said.
A team of restorers and archaeologists is now at the mosque to start the conservation, he added.
The mosque is a typical Islamic style architect that features an open court with four iwans.
