Mohamed Morsi submits his paperwork today for Egypt's presidential race, to run in case the Brotherhood's first choice, Khairat El-Shater, is ruled ineligible

A member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party legal committee, Faisal El-Sayed Mohamed Awad, has submitted the required documents for Mohamed Morsi, the party's backup candidate in case Khairat El-Shater is found ineligible.

Awad confirmed that the party has decided to file Morsi just in case El-Shater, their original candidate, faces any legal complications. Having been imprisoned on criminal charges in the past, El-Shater has only recently been issued permission from the military court to pursue his political aspirations, according to his lawyer. A legal debate is still ongoing whether El-Shater will be found eligible by the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission, having only received the court pardon so recently.

The electoral commission is tasked with reviewing the eligibility and legitimacy of the documents, and is expected to release the names of the eligible candidates on 16 April. Presidential election will be held on 23 and 24 May. If no candidate garners more than half the vote in the first round, the top two candidates will face one another in a runoff on 16-17 June.
