Egyptian fencer Mohamed Amer stunned Rio 2016 silver medalist and Pan American champion Daryl Homer in round of 32 of the sabre event of Saturday but lost to Korean Sanguk Oh in the following round.
Amer, who finished 31st in Brazil five years ago, defeated Daryl Homer 15-11 to cause an upset, having come back from 8-3 down at the end of the first period.
The 23-year-old set up a round of 16 meeting with Oh, who prevailed with a 15-9 victory.
Fellow Egyptian Ziad El Sissy also progressed to the round of 16 after beating Veniamin Reshetnikov of Russia 15-13 but lost 15-12 to Georgian Sandro Bazadze to exit the competition.
Earlier in the day, Bazadze beat Egypt's Mohab Shawki 15-10 in the round of 32.
