Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan netted twice, helping Egypt claim a narrow 2-1 win over Burkina Faso at Cairo stadium on Thursday as the Pharaoh maintained their perfect run in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Trabzonspor winger needed only three minutes to score with a rare header before adding the second five minutes later, taking his goal tally with the Pharaohs to 18 goals.
Burkina Faso’s Lassina Traore scored his team’s only goal in the 56 th minute.
The Pharaohs are now leading the Group with maximum nine points, four points behind second-placed Guinea Bissau who were held to a goalless draw at home by Ethiopia, earlier in the day.
Coach Hossam Hassan who made his first official appearance with the Egyptian national team surprised with a tactical modification, employing a 3-5-2 formation to compensate for the absence of a left back due to Mohamed Hamdi and Ahmed Fatouh being unavailable.
Meanwhile, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and FC Nantes' top scorer Mostafa Mohamed took charge upfront.
The team started the game in style as Trezeguet powered a header into the top corner of the net, meeting Salah's cross at the far post just three minutes into the match.
Two minutes later, Emar Ashour came close to adding the second goal, but the Ahly midfielder's close-range effort went wide.
Trezeguet struck again in the 8th minute with a well-placed shot from inside the area.
After establishing a two-goal lead, the Pharaohs controlled the game against a lackluster Burkina Faso side that struggled to threaten the hosts.
Egypt had a penalty claim in the 38th minute when Trezeguet was brought down in the area by the goalkeeper, but their demands were turned down by the referee.
The second half saw Burkina Faso's coach make three substitutions, which proved fruitful as the Burkinabe side exerted pressure on the Pharaohs from the start of the half and managed to score in the 56th minute.
Lassina Traore collected a rebounded ball from the post and scored from close range.
The visitors dominated a great part of the second half, particularly taking advantage of the poor physical condition of the Pharaohs players.
Egypt goalkeeper El Shennawy saved the team from conceding a late goal by denying Sacha Bande's close-range effort in the 84th minute.
In the remaining minutes, neither side posed a real threat, and the Pharaohs contained Burkina Faso's attempts to secure their third consecutive victory in the World Cup qualifiers.
Egypt will now visit Guinea Bissau on Monday, aiming to maintain their winning momentum in the qualifiers.
