Egypt U-23 team keeper Hamza Alaa believes that the Pharaohs are underrated despite the recent achievements at the current Paris Olympics.
Egypt's Olympic football team wrote a new history on Friday, reaching the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Games for the first time in 60 years.
The Egyptians overcame a resilient Paraguay side 5-4 on penalties after a pulsating 1-1 draw at the end of extra time.
“I say again that we respect all parties, all criticism and it’s obvious that all people are football experts, but I stress again that all your decisions and criticism don’t affect us at all,” the Ahly keeper told beIN SPORTS TV channel after Friday’s game.
Egypt kicked off their Olympic journey with a goalless draw against the Dominican Republic, followed by a 1-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
Then, they secured a historic 2-1 win against Spain on Tuesday to top Group C and qualified for the Paris Olympics quarterfinals against Paraguay.
Alaa, 23, was the hero against Paraguay, saving Marcelo Perez's shot before ensuring the victory as teammate Ibrahim Adel converted the decisive spot-kick.
“We are a big team and this generation is a historical one for Egyptian football. This generation is not getting the required appreciation whether from media and fans or financially and this thought must change,” said Alaa calling for more appreciation for his team.
The Pharaohs will face hosts France in the semi-finals on Monday.
