Egypt’s Mohamed Gabr fell short against Mohammadhadi Saravi of Iran in the semi-finals of the men’s Greco-Roman 97kg wrestling competition at the Paris Olympics.
The 27-year-old Egyptian, who had impressed earlier in the day with a 4-1 victory over second seed, Abubakar Khaslakhanau of Belarus, was unable to overcome the 2021 world champion and Tokyo bronze medalist.
The final score of 6-0 reflected the dominance of Saravi.
Despite the disappointing loss, Gabr’s Olympic journey is not over.
The Egyptian wrestler will now compete for the bronze medal, facing the winner of the repechage match between Kyrgyzstan’s Uzur Dzhuzupbekov and USA’s Josef Patrick Rau.
With another victory, Gabr will secure a place on the podium on his Olympic debut.
