Preview: Egypt take on Spain in handball quarter-finals, wrestling trio eye medals

Egypt handball team will kick off their knockout games with a crucial quarter-final tie against Spain in the Paris Olympic games on Wednesday.

The Pharaohs secured their place in the quarter-finals after a convincing 34-27 victory over Argentina on Sunday to finish second of Group B behind World Champions Denmark.

The African champion are favorit of this tie and coach Juan Carlos Pastor can rely on his stars Yehia Khaled, Ali Zein and Ahmed Hesham to make the difference.

Turning to wrestling, Egypt has three athletes competing. Mohamed Gabr will fight for the bronze medal in the 97 kg Greco-Roman category, facing the winner of the repechage match between Jose Patrick Rau of Uzur Dzhuzupbekov of Kyrgystan.

Mohamed 'Kesho' Ibrahim, the bronze medalist from Tokyo 2020, will compete in the 67 kg Greco-Roman Round of 16 against Azerbaijan's Hasrat Jafarov. Meanwhile, Mohamed Metwally, who achieved fifth place in Tokyo 2020, will face Kazakhstan's Nursultan Tursynov in the 87 kg Greco-Roman Round of 16.

In other sports, Sama Ahmed will represent Egypt in the Women's Kayak Single 500m Heats, aiming to qualify for the semifinals. Sama previously competed in Tokyo 2020 but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Finally, Maha Khaled Amer will participate in the Women's 3m Springboard Preliminary round. The top 18 divers will advance to the semifinals. Amer's previous Olympic experience was in Rio 2016 where she failed to qualify from the preliminary round.
