Egyptian athlete Ahmed Elgendy expressed his delight after leading the first semifinal group and advancing to the final of the Modern Pentathlon at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, held from 26 July to 11 August.
Elgendy secured his place in the final by topping the semifinal round and breaking the Olympic record, scoring 1,516 points.
"I started the competition with a few mistakes in the equestrian event, but I managed to finish the day better. I will work on avoiding these mistakes tomorrow in the final," Elgendy said in his post-competition remarks.
"Tying for first place in the fencing event yesterday gave me a lot of confidence in the competition," Elgendy added.
"I've been training with the coaching staff to break the Olympic record, but my goal was to achieve it in the final. Thankfully, I managed to break it today in the semifinal, and now my focus is entirely on tomorrow's final," Elgendy noted.
“Playing in such a historic venue with a large crowd is incredibly enjoyable, despite the challenge of competing against a French athlete who has massive local support,” Elgendy concluded.
Meanwhile, the second semifinal group in the men's individual event is currently underway, featuring Egyptian athlete Mohanad Shaban, who aims to qualify for the final as well.
