Colonel Elhamy Abdel-Moneim dies in a gunfight between security forces and members of an alleged kidnapping gang in Upper Egypt


A senior police officer was shot dead on Monday during a gunfight with members of an alleged kidnapping gang in Sohag, Upper Egypt, state news agency MENA reported.

Colonel Elhamy Abdel-Moneim died during a security raid to arrest the men.

As soon as police officers arrived in Tama village in Sohag they came under fire from the assailants.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013, attacks against police and army forces have spiked leaving hundreds of officers and soldiers injured and killed.
