A leading member of Sudan's Communist Party condemned the re-arrest of the 27-year-old Christian woman in Khartoum on Tuesday, after she had been released from detention.
"The regime in Sudan is confused between drawing an acceptable image for itself in the West and implementing what it describes as Islamic sharia," Al-ShafiKhodrtold Ahram Online.
Meriam Yahia IbrahimIshag, a Sudanese Christian woman, was arrested at Khartoum airport a day after a court annulled her death sentence for apostasy and released her from prison. Her American husband, Daniel Wani, and two young children -- one a baby born in prison before Ishag's release --were detained as well.
The family members were all released shortly after.
Ishaq was charged with forgery and providing false information in relation to a South Sudanese travel document she used to try to leave the country on Tuesday.
Her lawyer told AFP that Ishag is now taking refuge at the US embassy, claiming that she and her husband thinks "this is a safe place for them."
She was convicted under Islamic sharia law, which has been applied in Sudan since 1983 and outlaws conversions on pain of death. She was born to a Muslim father and an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian mother.
WadahTaber, coordinator of the anti-government Arab Alliance for Sudan, argued that the regime of President Omar Al-Bashir had to "get used to such battles."
"But they usually retreat from their positions” he claimed.
"Whether Meriam was released or not, the voice of opposition against all laws that violates Sudan's constitution will not be silenced,” Taber asserted.
