An art movement takes over Egypt’s squares on Saturdays
Ahram Online, Monday 2 May 2011
Egypt’s squares will be full of art starting the first Saturday of each month, thanks to The Coalition of Independent Culture’s coordination of the event Al Fan Meedan

The Coalition of Independent Culture has announced that Al Fan Meedan (Art is a square), art festivities held in large squares all over the country, will start on the first Saturday of each month.

They felt very encouraged after its success on 2 April in Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut, Port Said, Suez and Minya.

The coalition aims to make art accessible to everyone and a part of every individual’s life and to turn public places into spaces of self-expression. The festivities hold music, theatre and puppet show performances, poetry recitals, film screenings, activities for children and display different works of art and photography.

The participating artists are all volunteers and the events are funded by individuals, who endorse the importance of cultural activities.

The next event will be taking place in Abdeen Square (Cairo), Al Bonook Square (Assiut) and Bahary and Raas El Teen shore (Alexandria). It is also planned to take place in Kafr El Sheikh, Port Said, Suez and Luxor, although the squares are to be determined later by the coalition.
