Foreign minister also says that $3 billion in financial aid for Gaza Strip shows international commitment to Palestinians

Egypt's foreign affairs minister, Sameh Shoukry, said on Sunday that re-opening Palestinian-Israeli border crossings in Gaza will help in rebuilding the war-torn coastal enclave.

Speaking at an international summit in Cairo held to gather financial aid for the Gaza Strip, Shoukry said that the financial pledges amassed so far – $3 billion out of a targeted $4 billion – show there is global support to reconstruct Gaza and to help the Palestinian people live a better life.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked for the $4 billion in aid after a 50-day Israeli offensive in July and August caused massive damage to the strip. Over 2,200 Palestinians were killed and more than 12,000 others injured in the assault.

Shoukry added that the final solution for the Palestinian issue was through permanent peace and founding a Palestinian state with a capital of East Jerusalem.
