A total of 140 students have been expelled from Cairo University last academic year for engaging in protests and alleged violence on campus
Cairo University has readmitted 52 students expelled for participating in protests and alleged violence on campus, university head Gaber Nassar, told Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website on Wednesday.
Nassar said the students and their parents have signed pledges not to participate in any political protests or to engage in violence.
A total of 140 students have been expelled from Cairo University during the 2013-2014 academic year.
The president said the readmitted students have not been involved in criminal acts and added that parents "will cooperate with the university to monitor the students and their activities and practices on campus."
Fifteen students were killed in clashes with security forces and other students on campus during the last academic year, with many demonstrations turning violent, a state-appointed fact-finding committee said.
Another 257 students were expelled and dozens were injured during the rallies, mostly by supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
Independent rights group, the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression said 317 students have been arrested thus far from various campuses throughout Egypt this current academic year.
