Local governor orders an investigation into the incident

One-hundred and fifty students have been diagnosed with food poisoning at Al-Azhar University in Upper Egypt's Assiut, health ministry said.

The cases were reported at the girls dormitories on Thursday and they have been transported to several hospitals in Assiut city.

Meanwhile, the governor has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Al-Azhar University has been marred with similar incidents. In April, 29 students, also in the girls dormitories, contracted food poisoning on the university campus in Luxor.

In 2013, two major poisoning incidents – involving at least 500 students – were reported consecutively at its campuses in Cairo.

On a larger scale, the Egyptian education system suffers from rundown facilities and a curriculum criticised for being inadequate. The government says it lack sufficient funds to develop the sector, among other needy services nationwide.
