The US Supreme Court on Monday refused a request by Alabama's attorney general to keep same-sex marriages in the state on hold until the court decides whether laws banning them are constitutional.

The court said it would not issue a stay on a federal judge's ruling last month that struck down Alabama's ban on weddings between couples of the same sex.
