Mohamed Elneny and Ahmed Hamoudi became the first Egyptians to play in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase in 16 years after taking part in Basel's 1-1 draw at home to Porto in the first leg of the competition's round of 16 on Wednesday.

Central midfielder Elneny played the full 90 minutes and was booked in the first half while playmaker Hamoudi came on as a substitute with seven minutes remaining.

No Egyptian has managed to play in the knockout stage since former defender Hany Ramzy, who was red-carded in Kaiserslautern's 2-0 defeat by Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarters in 1999.

Danilo's late goal from the penalty spot secured a draw for Porto at Basel as the two clubs fought for a last-eight berth.

The Brazilian defender equalized with 11 minutes to play after a handball decision against Walter Samuel.

Derlis Gonzalez put the Swiss team ahead in the 11th, connecting with a long pass from Fabian Frei and beating two defenders before slotting the ball past Fabiano. In recent seasons Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool have all lost at St. Jakob-Park.

The Paraguayan's goal was a rare chance for Basel against a dominant opponent and provides a slender advantage ahead of the return leg on March 10.
