Syrian tanks move into city of Nawa north of Daraa in the army's latest move to crackdown on uprising

Syrian tanks moved into a southern city in the restive Hauran Plain on Tuesday after encircling it for the past three weeks, activists said.

Soldiers fired machineguns in the air as tanks and armoured personnel carriers entered Nawa, a city of 80,000 people 60 km (40 miles) to the north of the city of Daraa, cradle of the two-month uprising against Baathist rule, said activists from the region who contacted residents in the city.
