An Alexandria cassation court accepts the appeal of the state security officer convicted of torturing Sayed Belal to death in January 2011

An Alexandria court of cassation accepted the appeal of a state security officer convicted of torturing Sayed Belal to death and ordered a retrial.

State security officer, Osama El-Keneisy, was sentenced to 15 years in jail for torturing Sayed Belal to death during investigations into a bomb attack at the Two Saints Church in Alexandria in early January 2011.

Signs of torture were found on the victim's body, prompting his family to file a lawsuit against the state security officer.

El-Keneisy was a former officer in the now-disbanded State Security Investigations Service (SSIS).

Murals and posters of Belal, depicting him as a victim of police brutality, were common at the beginning of the 2011 revolution, which erupted in the same month.
