A policeman was killed on Tuesday after being shot in Sharqiya governorate by three unknown assailants who escaped on a motorbike, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

This marks the 21st time in the last two years that security or military personnel have been killed by unknown attackers in the Nile Delta’s Sharqiya governorate.

The policeman was on his way to work at Abo Hammad police station when he was shot in the chest and neck.

Twenty police and army personnel have been killed on their way to or from work in Sharqiya since the July 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, according to Al-Ahram.

In October 2014, the 20th such incident occurred in Abu-Kabeer city in Sharqiya when a low ranking police officer was shot dead by unknown assailants on his way home.

Sharqiya is located in the Nile Delta and is the third most populous governorate in Egypt. It is also the birthplace of former president Mohamed Morsi.
