A fire in the commercial hub of Haret El-Yahud (Jewish Alley) injured four people early Sunday, Egypt's ambulance authority head Ahmed Al-Ansary told Ahram Online.
The fire in Haret Al-Yahud, a high-density populated alley located off Gohar Al-Qaed Street (also known as Moski Street), about 300 metres from the historical Moez Street in Gammaliya district, destroyed a four-storey building hosting tens of shops, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.
A police officer and a civilian suffering the effects of suffocation were treated at the scene.
In addition, two policemen were transferred to hospital for treatment. One suffered a broken foot while the other has shards of glass in his eye.
Firemen used 16 fire trucks and two water tanks to put out the fire, according toAl-Ahram's Arabic news webiste.
Investigations are ongoing to detect the cause of the fire.
