Daoud Abdel-Sayed's latest film to participate in 26th Carthage Film Festival

The edition will also pay tribute to iconic women of Egyptian cinema


The 26thedition of Carthage Film Festival is scheduled to run between 21 and 28 November.

This year's edition is headed by Tunisian director and producer Ibrahim Letaief and aims to “anchor the Carthage Film Festival in its Arab-African land while maintaining openness to world cinematography, those who share our concern for independence and cultural expression,” as is mentioned on the festival's official website.

The Ethiopian film Lamb, directed by Yared Zeleke, will open the festival.

A total of 17 films will participate in the feature film competition (Gold Tanit Award). The list comprises of: Out of the ordinary (Egypt) by Daoud Abdel-Sayed, Much Loved (Morocco) by Nabil Ayouch, The Letter to the King (Iraq) by Hisham Zaman, The Road (Lebanon) by Rana Salem, Our House (Mali) by Souleymane Cissé and Difret (Ethiopia) by Zeresenay Mehari.

As for the short film competition, it comprises of 13 films, including Lonely Fighter in the Zone (Egypt) by Alaa Hikal, The Wave (Algeria) by Omar Belkacemi, Mother Earth (Senegal) by Aliou Sow, and Diaspora (Tunisia) by Alaeddin Abou Taleb.

In addition, a total of 16 films are participating in the documentary film competition, amongst them Out on the Street (Egypt) by Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk, Stray (Egypt) by Ahmad Fostok, Queens of Syria (Syria) by Yasmin Fedda, Diaries of a Flying Dog (Lebanon) by Bassem Fayad and The Council (Jordan) by Alabdallah Yahya.

This year's edition will celebrate Argentinian and Italian cinema. It will also pay tribute to iconic women of Egyptian cinema, including late actresses Faten Hamama, Mariam Fakhr El-Din and Maali Zayed, and late directors Asmaa El-Bakry and Nabeeha Lotfy. It will also honour Tunisian director Nouri Bouzid, Algerian writer Assia Djebar, Tunisian cinematographer Habib Masrouki, and Portuguese director Manoel De Oliveira.
