TP Mazembe have now equaled Zamalek's Champions League record of five titles, three behind record champions Ahly – who last won the title in 2013
TP Mazembe coach Patrice Carteron praised the performance of Algerian side USM Alger during their second leg game in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) despite winning the CAF Champions League title for the fifth time on Sunday.
DRC's TP Mazembe won the CAF Champions League title for the fifth time in their history after beating USM Algers 2-0 in the second leg of the competition's final in Lubumbashi.
Mazembe went to the return leg leading by a single goal after securing a 2-1 first-leg win away from home, as two goals from Mbwana Samatta and Roger Assale helped the Congolese giants prevail 4-1 on aggregate.
"We beat a good team, who played better during the second leg," Carteron told the post game press conference.
"They caused us a lot of problems, especially in the first half," he said.
"My players were under pressure, due to the excitement that spread through the city during the week," the French coach added.
"I think that physical freshness made the difference in the two games," Carteron concluded.
TP Mazembe have now equaled Zamalek's Champions League record of five titles, three behind record champions Ahly – who last won the title in 2013.
Mazembe will now represent Africa in Japan's Club World Cup, where European champions Barcelona and Argentina's River Plate will also compete, in December.
