Egyptian interior ministry to allow student out of prison to attend father's funeral
The engineering student missed his father's burial ceremony but will be able to attend the funeral prayers
Egypt's interior ministry has granted permission for jailed student Ayman Moussa to attend his father's funeral, a security source in the ministry said.
Supporters of the 21-year-old student, who is serving a 15-year sentence for charges related to an illegal protest, had launched a social media campaign calling for Moussa to be given permission to attend his father's burial and funeral in Cairo.
The source told Al-Ahram Arabic that there are security procedures currently taking place to transfer Moussa from Wadi El-Natroun prison, following a request by Moussa to prison authorities, adding that if there were any obstacles in securing him, the request would be void.
An online campaign that was launched on Tuesday by the British University in Egypt Student Union after the former engineering student's father died.
The hashtag soon went viral, and several prominent human rights activists and the Association of Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) expressed solidarity with the campaign.
The engineering student missed the burial of his father, which took place earlier in the week, but will be able to attend the funeral prayers in Heliopolis on Friday.
Moussa was arrested in October 2013, and sentenced in September 2014 to 15 years in prison and a fine of LE20,000 on charges of attempted murder, illegal protesting, and other offences committed during the Azbakeya neighbourhood clashes, also known in the Egyptian media as the 'October 6 clashes'.
