Egypt's FM calls for concerted global efforts to uproot terrorism

Egypt has condemned "in the strongest terms" an attack by Islamist militants on a hotel in Mali's capital that killed more than 20 people, urging global unity to combat terrorism.

Militant gunmen shouting Islamic slogans attacked the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako Friday, before Malian special forces stormed the building and freed 170 hostages after a nine-hour siege.

"Egypt condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on a hotel in Bamako," a statement by the foreign ministry said Saturday.

Several Russians and three Chinese were killed in the Friday attack that was claimed by the Islamist militant group Al-Mourabitoun and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate.

The incident came a week after a series of coordinated attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and were claimed by the ISIS.

"Terrorist attacks several countries have recently witnessed highlight that terrorism is a global phenomenon that requires concerted efforts to uproot," the foreign ministry statement added.
