Art Alert: Maktoub to present fusion of jazz and Arabic music in Alexandria, Cairo
The instrumental ensemble, Maktoub, will hold a concert in Alexandria on 22 January and will also perform in Cairo the following day.
Founded in 2013, Maktoub began as a trio with Ahmed Maher on oud, Ayman Mabrouk on percussion and Wael El Sayed on accordion. Later on, they were joined by the French/Lebanese musician Andre Segon on double bass.
The quartet present themselves as an ensemble that blends their diverse experience together to explore a new genre of music.
Maktoub quartet is all about music, the exploration of sounds with a language that oscillates between oriental influences and jazz formats, which in turn invites a lot of improvisation.
Over the past two years, Maktoub has given concerts at many venues across Egypt and participated in Copenhagen World Music Festival where they were joined by renowned Danish and Swedish musicians.
