FIFA candidate Infantino expects 'majority' of African votes
AP, Monday 22 Feb 2016

Gianni Infantino says he expects the majority of Africa's 54 countries to back him in this week's FIFA presidential election.

Africa is FIFA's largest confederation by number of voting countries and is shaping up to be a key battleground ahead of Friday's vote to choose the next head of world soccer.

Making one last trip to Africa, where he began his campaigning last year, Infantino says in Cape Town he hopes to have made ''an impact'' on the continent and ''I think I will have a majority of the African votes.''

Infantino is on a short-notice visit to South Africa to see where Nelson Mandela was jailed during apartheid.

The Confederation of African Football's executive committee has formally endorsed one of Infantino's rivals for the presidency, Sheikh Salman of Bahrain.
