Activist Mahmoud Shabaan is believed to have been kidnapped by security officers

Activist and member of the independent Mohamed ElBaradei Campaign in Alexandria, Mahmuod Shabaan, was reported by Mohamed Farid —a friend and activist —as missing since Friday evening.

Farid said that he received a text message from Shabaan at 1:30am reading saying “I have been arrested …” but that he had only seen it the next morning. He says he called Shabaan’s mother who confirmed that he never returned home that night.Farid contacted several lawyers and toured police stations asking about Shabaan, but he could not be found.

ElBaradei Campaign members warned in reaction that if Egypt slips back into kidnapping political activists this would only revive the revolution. The Revolution Youth Coalition in Alexandria also said they are alarmed at the crackdowns taking place under the current ruling military regime, adding that it is a sign that the regime is working against the revolution’s principles.
